GIRLFRIEND OF PHILANDO CASTILLE REACHES SETTLEMENT FOR EMOTIONAL DISTRESS

Diamond Reynolds who was in the car and live streamed the fatal shooting by police of her boyfriend, Philando Castile has reached a settlement. Reynolds has settled with two cities for $800,000 Wednesday. Both Reynolds and her 4 year old daughter were in the car and witnessed Castile’s death on July 6th 2016, but we’re not injured. However Reynolds was put in handcuffs after the shooting and was held by the Roseville police alongside her daughter. Roseville police said the treatment of Reynolds and her young daughter was routine procedure. The two cities also said
“The settlement is not an assignation of blame, but rather, a result of both parties' desire "to avoid the protracted litigation involved with adjudicating state claims and potential civil rights claims, which may have taken years to resolve”
Castile was pulled over during a traffic stop in 2016 and told the officer, Jeronimo Yanez that he did have a firearm on him. That encounter was recorded on the officers dash cam, soon after Yanez shot Castile multiple times resulting in his death. The officer was charged with second degree manslaughter and two felony counts of dangerous discharge of a firearm in November 2016. After a jury acquitted Yanez in June he was let go from the St. Anthony police department. In June, St. Anthony reached a $3 million settlement with Philando’s family. On the settlement Diamond Reynolds said,
“While no amount of money can change what happened, bring Philando back or erase the pain that my daughter and I continue to suffer, I do hope that closing this chapter will allow us to get our lives back and move forward.”
Last December the justice department announced it would review the St. Anthony police department and that would report is to be completed in 2018.
